SURVIVING CHANGE

Dictionaries use many phrases to define ‘change’. A definitive phrase that seems most applicable to changing markets is ‘to give a completely different form or appearance’. In the face of change some businesses and organizations survive. Others do not. - - Some even prosper.

Those that survive and, to a greater extent those that prosper, use information that allows them to create and execute a plan designed to adapt their operations to changing market conditions. The rate of change determines the speed with which an organization must receive information and the speed with which they must plan and accomplish their adaptation. When change is rapid, the rate at which information is obtained and the resultant planning and execution must also be fast. When the rate of change is slow, the flow of information and the time to respond can also be more relaxed.

While change is constant, the rate of change is rapidly increasing. It began with the Industrial Revolution and gained speed with the advent of computer technology. It accelerated even more with the introduction of personal computers and again with the proliferation of the Internet. In 1999 the rate with which consumers are using technology to conduct personal business is at an all-time high. They are using personal computers and the Internet, from home and office, to make airline reservations, reserve hotel rooms, conduct banking, pay bills, trade stocks, purchase a wide variety of products and services, look for a home to purchase, and to select a real estate professional.

With the proliferation of Internet use by consumers, real estate brokers and agents must change the nature and scope of the products and services they offer. And, real estate Associations and Multiple Listing Services must recognize and adapt, facilitating the survival strategies of those they serve.
